A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
